Stolberg in 1789, with Wernigerode to the northwest near Halberstadt

This specimen was lot 73350 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Stolberg-Stolberg. 12 Mariengroschen, 1712-IIG. Christoph Friedrich and Jost Christian. NGC VF Details--Harshly Cleaned. A popular type accounting to the reindeer pictorial, this example delivers presentability, despite the noted harsh cleaning." The animal shown is a red deer (elk in the U.S.), not a reindeer. Twelve mariengroschen was one-third thaler. This type was struck 1707-28 and is rather expensive for an obscure minor.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-133.
