St. Gall 1738-GR 30 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 5420 in Sincona sale 68 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 225 CHF (about US$296 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND | St. Gallen | Stadt und Kanton, Halbgulden (30 Kreuzer) 1738, St. Gallen. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Fast vorzüglich. (city and canton of St. Gall, half gulden or thrity kreuzer of 1738, St. Gall mint. Rare in this condition, About extremely fine.)"
Four kreuzer made a batzen and forty batzen made a thaler. In the seventeenth century, the gulden was two-thirds of a thaler but with the introduction of the convention thaler in the 1740's, the gulden slipped to half a thaler. The reverse motto, "LIBERTAS CARIOR AURO", translates to, "Freedom is more precious than gold."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver; this specimen 7.41 g.
