St. Gall 1738-GR 15 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 4500 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 350 CHF (about US$508 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ St. Gallen, Stadt und Kanton, 15 Kreuzer 1738, St. Gallen. Mzz. Schlange auf Avers und GR auf Revers. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Gutes vorzüglich. Kleines Zainende. (Switzerland, St. Gall, fifteen kreuzer of 1738, St. Gall mint. Mintmark: snake on obverse and 'GR' on reverse. Rare in this condition, About Uncirculated, Minor edge clip.)"
This type was struck 1724-25, 1730-34, 1737-39. The SCWC mentions the "GR" mintmark only for 1730-31 but 'tis plain on this example and the 1737. The convention thaler was 120 kreuzer.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, 29 mm diameter, this specimen 4.49 g.
