Sincona sale 95, lot 4504

This specimen was lot 4504 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 90 CHF (about US$125 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ St. Gallen, Stadt und Kanton, Groschen 1721, St. Gallen. Rv. Wertzahl 3 in einem spanischen Wappen. Mzz. Bäumchen. Selten. Schön-sehr schön. Von dieser Variante mit Wertzahl in spanischem Wappen existiert laut Tobler/Zäch/Nussbaum nur ein Stempelpaar. (Switzerland, city and canton of St. Gall, groschen of 1721, St. Gall mint. Reverse: value in Spanish arms, mintmark: tree. Rare, Fine-Very Fine. According to Tobler/Zäch/Nussbaum, only one pair of dies exists of this variety with the value in the Spanish arms.)"

Numista notes that groschen were struck in St. Gall 1714-15, 1720-32, 1737-39 while this subtype was struck 1721-25. Other varieties, such as KM 87 and KM 86, have the date on the bear side.
