Spain 1953(62) peseta

This coin, issued in the later years of the Franco regime (1939-75), is a descendant of the silver peseta issued in the late nineteenth century. This denomination was first issued in aluminum bronze in 1944 (KM 767). This type was issued 1948-67 in large quantities. Although the coin is dated 1953, the true minting date is incuse in the stars on the reverse, where a tiny "62" can be spied. Spain was the only country to do this and abandoned this clumsy system after 1982, during the reign of Juan Carlos.
