Sincona Auction 103, lot 974

This specimen was lot 974 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 900 CHF (about US$1,372 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SPANIEN Königreich, Alfonso XIII. 1886-1931. 20 Pesetas 1896 (1961) MP-M, Madrid. Offizielle Neuprägung. Nur 900 Exemplare geprägt. (kingdom of Spain, Alfonso XIII, 1886-1931, twenty pesetas of 1896, restruck at the Madrid mint in 1961. Only 900 specimens struck. NGC MS64.)"

The original coin was struck in Madrid in 1899. The restrikes were made 1961-62, purportedly at the behest of a Liechtenstein marketing company which sold them to collectors. Numista comments, "The restrikes are the 10 Pesetas and 25 Pesetas of Alfonso XII, and the 20 Pesetas (two types) and 100 Pesetas of Alfonso XIII." The star to the right of the date contains the actual date of manufacture.

Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, .186 troy oz AGW.
