Aureo sale 242, lot 333

The specimen shown was lot 333 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 240 € (about US$373 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

Isabel II (1833-1868). 1858. Barcelona. 8 maravedís. Parte de brillo original. Muy bella. Escasa. EBC+. (Isabel II, 1833-68, eight maravedis of 1858, Barcelona mint. Some mint luster, very handsome, choice extremely fine.)

This is a very late date for this Spanish pre-decimal denomination and from a mint that did not normally strike this denomination. This type was struck at Jubia 1836-50 and at Barcelona (shown here) 1852-58. It varies from the earlier type (KM 512) by the addition of the word "CONST" in the obverse legend.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: copper, 12.10 g, 29.0-29.1 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16744, KM 531.1, Cal. 471.
