Spain 1855-Ba 8 maravedis
This specimen was lot 331 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 300 euros (about US$495 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1855. Barcelona. 8 maravedís. Bella. Parte de brillo original. Rara así. EBC/EBC+. (Eight maravedis of 1855, Barcelona mint. Nice, lustrous, rare thus, choice Extremely Fine.)"
This is a very late date for this pre-decimal denomination and from a mint that did not normally strike this denomination. This type was struck at Jubia 1836-50 and at Barcelona (shown here) 1852-58. It varies from the earlier type (KM 512) by the addition of the word "CONST" in the obverse legend.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.
Specification: copper, 12.10 g, 29.0-29.1 mm diameter.
