Áureo y Calicó sale 345, lot 706

This specimen was lot 706 in Áureo y Calicó sale 345 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €256 (about US$338 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1858. Isabel II. Sevilla. 4 reales. Bella. Brillo original. Ex Áureo & Calicó 24/01/2019, nº 589. Rara así. EBC+. (kingdom of Spain, Isabel II, four reales of 1858, Seville mint. Handsome, original luster, rare thus, choice extremely fine.)"

This type was struck in Barcelona, Madrid and Seville 1856-64. Instead of the traditional "M" and "S" mintmarks the issues are distinguished by three, four, six, seven or eight pointed stars on the reverse (for Segovia, Jubia, Madrid (shown here), Seville and Barcelona). In 1850, the twenty reales was reduced to 26.91 grams and the copper maravedis dropped in favor of 1/20, 1/10 and 1/5 reales.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 5.19 g, 0.900 fine silver, .150 troy oz AS, 23.4-23.6 mm diameter, this specimen 5,19 g.
