Spain 1740-S PJ 2 escudos
The first specimen was lot 1179 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 28 (Winter Park, FL, November 2020), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "Seville, Spain, gold bust 2 escudos, Philip V, 1740PJ. Bold but polished AU with mounting mark at top and several small marks." The second specimen was lot 234 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 1,700 € (about US$2,221 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted, "1740. Felipe V. Seville. PJ. 2 escudos. Nice. Lovely color. Some of its original luster. Rare, especially in this condition. 6.74 g. EBC [extremely fine]. Ex Aureo & Calico 12/16/2020, no. 1321."This type was struck 1730-42 at Seville (shown here) and 1730-34 at Madrid. It is not listed as expensive but many, such as this one, are damaged.
