Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74625

This specimen was lot 74625 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Escudo, 1737-M JF. Madrid Mint. Philip V. PCGS AU-50. A more difficult date, this excellent survivor offers a great golden-yellow hue along with dazzling brilliance and just a slight degree of handling. From the David Sterling Collection." This type was struck in Madrid and Seville 1729-42 and is rather rare. One escudos were struck in metropolitan Spain throughout the eighteenth century but do not become common until the issues of Charles III in the 1770's.
