Aureo y Calicó sale 448, lot 257

This specimen was lot 257 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 8,500 € (about US$11,104 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1709/8. Felipe V. Seville. M. 8 escudos. "Cross" type. 8-S/M-8. Lovely color. Very rare. MBC+ [choice very fine]." This type was struck 1701-19 at Seville with various assayers. Assayer M is listed for 1707-19. This overdate is listed with a lower price in the SCWC than the regular date. This example shows "S 8 M 8" on the reverse; this date is also known with "M 8 S 8" (Cayón-9914).
