Spain 1709-M J 4 reales
This specimen was lot 3921 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 1,300 CHF (about US$1,600 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SPANIEN Felipe V. 1700-1746. 4 Reales 1709, Madrid. Belorbeertes Brustbild nach rechts, darunter die Jahreszahl. Rv. Gekröntes Wappen, Schöne Patina. Vorzüglich. (Spain, Philip V, 1700-46, four reales of 1709, Madrid mint. Obverse: laureate bust to right, date below; reverse: crowned arms; nice toning, extremely fine.)"
This type was issued at Madrid and Seville 1709 only. The succeeding type featured a crown and octolobe with no portrait. All the early four reales of Spain are rare and expensive.
