Bolivia 1709-P Y 4 reales
This specimen was lot 71184 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, 1709/1708-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Diego de Ybarbouru (Y). Philip V. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, VF Details. This interesting piece, evidently a mule, displays two different dates: 1708 on the obverse and 1709 on the reverse. A mintmark, assayer's initial, and denomination also appear on the obverse. The reverse is largely flat but shows a pleasing castle and lion with the lower portion of the cross. The noted tooling is limited to a large flat area on the obverse, thus, it does not affect any of the details. Attractive mottled gray toning completes the coin. This highly unusual two-date mule offers plenty of intriguing details and eye appeal. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This type was struck for Philip V through his entire reign--unlike in Europe, his rule was never challenged in America. Assayer Y stamped coins 1701-28. This mule is not mentioned in Cayón.
