Spain 1707-S M 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 33293 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $9,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Spain: Philip V gold 8 Escudos 1707 S-M AU53 NGC, Seville mint. A lesser-seen date in this already scarce series and one rarely encountered in any condition, let alone approaching Mint State. Sun-gold appearances gently mask surface granularity commonly seen on these early milled issues of Seville. An important specimen that will demand a premium." This was issued from Seville in the midst of the War of the Spanish Succession, wherein Philip V successfully defeated the archduke Charles' attempt to seize the throne. This expensive type was struck 1701-19.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold.
