Spain 1685-Seg BR 4 reales
This specimen was lot 467 in Áureo y Calicó sale 345 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €240 (about US$317 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1685. Carlos II. Segovia. BR. 4 reales. Rara. MBC-. (kingdom of Spain, Charles II, four reales of 1685, Segovia mint. Rare, about very fine.)"
This equivalent of a half dollar was struck at the Segovia mint in 1683-85 during the reign of king Charles II. This well struck, nicely centered coin may be contrasted with the crude cobs being minted at the Latin American mints, where screw presses were not installed until the 18th century.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 12,94 g.
