South Africa 1959 shilling
This specimen was lot 73200 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $90. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. Shilling, 1959. London Mint. NGC MS-65. KEY DATE for the type. An enticing and eye-appealing Gem with full cartwheel luster and faint color to the surfaces." In 1960, South Africa withdrew from the British Commonwealth and in 1961 issued all new coins, dropping the bust of the queen for explorer Jan van Riebeeck. This type was issued 1953-60 along with a silver threepence, sixpence, florin, half crown and crown. It is common tho slightly scarcer than the other dates.
Recorded mintage: 205,000 plus 900 proofs.
