This specimen was lot 73201 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. 6 Pence, 1959. London Mint. NGC MS-65. A lovely, eye-catching Gem with silky full luster and gentle toning." In 1960, South Africa withdrew from the British Commonwealth and in 1961 issued all new coins, dropping the bust of the queen for explorer Jan van Riebeeck. This type was issued 1953-60 along with a silver threepence, shilling, florin, half crown and crown. It is common.

Recorded mintage: 261,000 plus 900 proofs.

Specification: 2.83 g, 0.500 fine silver, 19.41 mm diameter.
