This shilling was issued for the British colony of Nigeria just prior to independence, along with half, one, three, six pence and florins. The other denominations were struck in 1959 only but the shilling was issued until 1962. Prior to this issue, Nigeria used the coins of British West Africa, issued 1913-52. The palm shown on the reverse is the oil palm, a major cash crop in west Africa.

Specification: copper nickel, 22.8 mm diameter, security edge, designed by Cecil Thomas.
