South Africa, after a turbulent history between English and Dutch settlers and the native population, was constituted the Union of South Africa in 1910. Coinage commenced in 1923. The half pennies, modeled on British half pennies of the sterling system, featured the Dromedaris, a Dutch sailing ship, on the reverse. This type was struck 1937-47. The half penny and penny were struck in larger quantities than the farthing.

Recorded mintage: 638,256 plus 116 proofs.

Specification: 5.67 g, bronze, 25.6 mm diameter, plain edge.
