South Africa 1936 penny

Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 75654

This specimen was lot 75654 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. Penny, 1936. Pretoria Mint. George V. NGC AU-58. Crowned portrait of king George V. Popular reverse design of a 19th century frigate." The South African pennies of George V run 1923-36 with this subtype issued 1931-36. It is common. The ship on the reverse is a bark from the 17th century, not the 19th century.

Recorded mintage: 1,819,000 plus 40 proofs.
