Künker sale 386, lot 5447

This specimen was lot 5447 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €5,000 (about US$6,461 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHLESIEN, LIEGNITZ-BRIEG, HERZOGTUM, Christian, 1639-1672. Reichstaler 1666, GFH/CBS, Brieg. Eisenschneider Georg Franz Hoffmann und Münzmeister/Wardein Christoph Brettschneider. Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, kl. Schrötlingsfehler, fast vorzüglich. (duchy of Silesia-Liegnitz-Brieg, Christian, 1639-72, thaler of 1666, Brieg mint. Attractive example with handsome patina, minor planchet flaws, about extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1666 and 1671-72 and, tho rare and expensive, is likely the most common thaler from this state. The coinage ceased when the last of the local dukes died in 1675. Silesia was ruled by the Hapsburgs until it was conquered by Frederick the Great in the 1740's.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 29.00 g.
