Goldberg sale 128, lot 1997
G128-1997r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1997 in Goldberg sale 128 (Los Angeles, June 2022), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italian States: Sicily. 6 Tari, 1735-FN. Carlo. Coronation of Carlo Borbone. NGC graded VF-25." Charles II, the last Hapsburg king of Spain, was also king of Naples and Sicily. After his death the area passed out of the hands of the Spanish crown, only to be reconquered by them in the 1730's. In the interim, Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor 1711-40, was also king of Sicily 1720-34. He was ousted by the Spanish, who installed Charles, the younger son of Philip V, as king of Naples and Sicily. Confusingly, both contenders called themselves Carlo III. Twelve tari was half a piastra. The SCWC shows two types for 1735 (KM 149 and KM 150) but does not provide an image of KM 150, which we believe lacks the fleurs-de-lys shown on the reverse.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.58 g, silver.

Catalog reference: KM-149.
