Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1725

This specimen was lot 1725 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €90 (about US$119 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, SICILE, Charles III de Bourbon (1734-1759), AR 3 tari, 1735F-N, Palerme. D/ B. l. et dr. à d. HIS INF en fin de légende. R/ Croix ornée. presque Très Beau. (Italy, kingdom of Sicily, Charles III of Bourbon, 1734-59, silver three tari of 1735, Palermo mint. Obverse: laureate and draped bust right; reverse: ornate cross. about Very Fine.)"

This type is listed for 1735 only and tho listed cheaply in low grade, the price ascends rapidly with condition. There is also a half tari (KM 143), one tari (KM 144), two tari (KM 146), four tari (KM 148), six tari (KM 149), 12 tari (KM 151) and gold issues. Sicily, having been Spanish for several centuries, fell to Sardinian rule in 1714 as part of the partition which ended the War of the Spanish Succession. King Philip V's second wife was Italian and was anxious to carve out territories for her son Carlos, who was not expected to inherit the throne of Spain. Accordingly, a Spanish army was sent to Italy and after various adventures, managed to conquer Sicily in 1720 and Naples in 1734. Carlos ruled the area as "Carlo di Borbone" until he inherited the throne of Spain on the death of his half brother Fernando in 1759.
