Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 31331
SB822-31331r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31331 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $18,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "SCOTLAND. 60 Shillings, 1691. Edinburgh Mint. William & Mary. PCGS AU-55. Nearly unknown in this condition, with the next closest certified example merely being a VF-20 example certified by NGC. The TREMENDOUS RARITY of this coin to be preserved in this condition almost beggars belief and should stun any British or Scottish collectors. Wonderfully struck, with a rich application of beautifully engraved detail that is only moderately affected by wear. A rich mint glossiness remains, and the deeply colored flan adds an exceptional depth of charm to the surfaces. A phenomenal piece, and a lot that should engender spirited bidding, as it is unlikely that many other examples of similar condition will come to market. From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection." The exchange rate between Scottish and English coinage varied but during this reign, 13 shillings Scots = one English shilling. This type was struck 1691-92.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, approx. 27.5 g.

Catalog reference: S-5642; KM-134, Dav-3789.
