H3089-30207r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30207 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $6,900. The catalog description[1] noted, "Scotland. James VII (II of England) Restrike 60 Shilling 1688-Dated (1828) MS65 NGC. A formidable gem example of this 1820s restrike issue, believed to have been produced by Matthew Young in the 1820s using original dies. Nearly Prooflike in the fields, which reveal underlying reflectivity against a current of steel and lilac tone. Meticulously cared for since its production nearly 200 years ago, hardly a mark to be seen across the sleek, argent surfaces. From the Cape Coral Collection of European Crowns." The SCWC lists only a ten shillings (KM 121) and a forty shillings (KM 122) for James VII (II). The sixty shillings (equalled five English shillings or a silver crown), never got past the pattern stage. Restrikes were also made in gold.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-X21, Dav-3788.
