This specimen was lot 33290 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "SCOTLAND. 40 Shillings, 1688 Year QVARTO. Edinburgh Mint. James VII. PCGS EF-45. Emanating from the year of James's exiling, this example displays only moderate signs of handling and a charming level of toning, with some fairly typical haymarking and adjustment marks noted. From the Richard August Collection." This type was struck 1687-88 and was worth two Scottish pounds or four English shillings.
