Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt ("S.R.") in 1789

This specimen was lot 30254 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $5,520. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. Taler, 1765-ICE. Saalfeld Mint. Johann Friedrich. PCGS MS-62. A fairly RARE offering, this crown emanates from the second year of a very brief two-year series, and sports an enticing cabinet tone with immense brilliance residing beneath. Furthering its charm that much more is a subtle pastel palette that captures the gaze and attention of the viewer. The only example of the type in the PCGS census. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This is the first of five thalers issued by this fragment of the Saxon duchies in the eighteenth century. The line survived until World War One. This type was struck 1764-65 and is scarce.
