Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld 1765-ICE thaler Dav-2752C
This specimen was lot 3289 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld, Herzogtum, Ernst Friedrich, 1764-1800. Taler 1765 ICE, Saalfeld. Typ mit dem Ordensstern und der Stempelschneidersignatur OEXLEIN im Halsabschnitt. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, Ernest Frederick, 1764-1800, thaler of 1765, Saalfeld mint. Type with order star and engraver's initial's on bust. Very rare, Very fine.)"
The duchy was known as Saxe-Saalfeld until 1735 when the dukes added Coburg to their domain. In 1826, Saalfeld was traded to Saxe-Meiningen in exchange for Gotha and the duchy survived until World War One as Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. This type was issued in 1764-65 along with the closely related Dav-2752, Dav-2752A and Dav-2752B.
