Künker Auction 441, lot 4587

This specimen was lot 4587 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,169 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-GOTTORP, HERZOGTUM Christian Albrecht, 1659-1694. 2 Mark 1681, Schleswig. Münzmeister Claus Jakob Mecklenburg. RR Kl. Prägeschwäche, sehr schön. Exemplar der Sammlung Münzen und Medaillen aus adeligem Privatbesitz. (duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp, Christian Albert, 1659-94, two mark of 1681, Schleswig mint. Very rare, slightly weakly struck, very fine.)"

The dynastic affairs of this duchy were complicated even by German standards as the dukes were related to the king of Denmark and even the czar of Russia. This two mark piece weighs three-fourths of a thaler. The SCWC notes three different two mark from this state for 1681: KM 134/Dav-576, KM 135, KM 136/Dav-577 (shown here, struck 1681-82). All are extremely rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 21,96 g.

Catalog reference: KM 136, Dav-577; Lange 401.
