Künker sale 293, lot 1336
Holstein in 1648

This specimen was lot 1336 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €280 (about US$377 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN, HOLSTEIN-GOTTORP, HERZOGTUM, Christian Albrecht, 1659-1694. 2/3 Taler 1683, Plön oder Eutin. Sehr schön +. Exemplar der Slg. Bernhard Terletzki. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 46, Osnabrück 1999, Nr. 3140. Das Münzmeisterzeichen "CR" auf der Rückseite steht für Caspar Ridder, der seit 1677 Münzmeister in Plön war. Seit 1678 wird er auch als bischöflich lübeckischer Münzmeister erwähnt. Die bischöfliche Münzstätte lag in Eutin. (Germany, duchy of Holstein-Gottorp, Christian Albrecht, 1659-94, two-thirds thaler of 1683, Plon or Eutin mints. Very fine or better. The initials "CR" on the reverse stand for Caspar Ridder, who had been a mintmaster in Plön since 1677. Since 1678, he was also mentioned as an episcopal mintmaster. The episcopal mint was located in Eutin.)"

The dynastic affairs of this duchy were complicated even by German standards as the dukes were related to the king of Denmark and even the czar of Russia. Most coin issues are rare, including this one minted 1683 and 1688 only.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-574; Lange 378 c, KM-143.
