Schaumburg-Lippe 1898 5 mark rev Heritage 3021-20711.jpg

The first specimen was lot 4089 in Sincona sale 9 (Zürich, October 2012), where it sold for 1700 CHF (about US$2,150 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Schaumburg-Lippe, Fürstentum Georg, 1893-1911. 5 Mark 1898. Vorzüglich-FDC aus Polierter Platte. (Principality of Schaumburg-Lippe, George, 1893-1911, five mark of 1904, Berlin mint. Extremely fine to uncirculated on a polished planchet.)"

This specimen was lot 20711 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $4,993.75. The catalog description[2] noted, "Schaumburg-Lippe. Georg Proof 5 Mark 1898-A, Proof 65 NGC, a splendid example of this elusive type with aged iridescent blue-green and russet patina. The surfaces are fully reflective and the overall eye appeal is incredible. Very rare in Proof with a minuscule mintage of 90, and few can have survived in this remarkable quality. From The Elizabeth MacPhail Charters Collection." This type was struck 1898 and 1904 only and is rare. It is likely an impaired proof. Silver two mark and gold twenty mark were also issued in 1898.

Recorded mintage: 3,000 plus 90 proofs.

Specification: 27.77 g, 0.900 fine silver, 38 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: J. 165. KM 50, Dav-911.
