This specimen was lot 32034 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hesse-Darmstadt. 5 Mark, 1898-A. Berlin Mint. Ernst Ludwig. NGC PROOF-64 Cameo. Surpassed in the NGC census by just two examples across designations, this near-Gem proof crown displays a light degree of enticing toning along with an impressive cameo nature and glistening brilliance." This five mark piece was issued from the Berlin mint for the grand duke in 1895 and 1898-1900. This type is rather scarce.
Recorded mintage: 37,480 plus 240 proofs.
Specification: 27.77 g, 0.900 fine silver, 38 mm diameter, lettered edge.
