This specimen was lot 33864 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Hesse-Darmstadt. Ernst Ludwig 5 Mark 1899-A AU58 NGC, Berlin mint. The lowest mintage date for the type and the only example yet certified by NGC to wit, appearing very nearly Mint State with full luster to the fields and a sharp relief to the devices." This five mark piece was issued from the Berlin mint for the grand duke in 1895 and 1898-1900. This type is rather scarce. This example did not realize anything close to the catalog value.

Recorded mintage: 4,475 + 176 proofs.

Specification: 27.77 g, 0.900 fine silver, 38 mm diameter.
