Schaumburg-Lippe 1858-A 2-1/2 groschen
The first specimen was lot 1324 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €180 (about US$243 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHAUMBURG-LIPPE, SCHAUMBURG-LIPPE, GRAFSCHAFT, Georg Wilhelm, 1807-1860. 1/12 Taler 1858. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Winz. Kratzer, polierte Platte. (Germany, county of Schaumburg-Lippe, George William, 1807-60, one twelfth thaler of 1858. Very scarce in this quality, tiny scratches, polished blank.)"
The second specimen was lot 23564 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $90. The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. 2-1/2 Silver Groschen (1/12 Taler), 1858-A. Berlin Mint. Georg Wilhelm. PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. Pop: 1; only one graded higher by a 'plus' at PCGS. An almost prooflike example of the type with frosty obverse bust and flashy fields on both sides." The tiny state of Schaumburg-Lippe issued coinage only sporadically. In 1858, the count issued a half silber groschen (1/60 thaler, KM 43), one silber groschen (1/50 thaler, KM 44) and this 2½ silber groschen. All are common in circulated condition.
