Sincona sale 4, lot 4464

This specimen is one of a type struck in Hannover for the prince of Schaumburg-Lippe. The prince did not see fit to issue coinage regularly and examples from this tiny state are scarce. In 1871, with the successful conclusion of the Franco-Prussian War, the currency was reformed to use pfennig and marks and the taler was dropped, tho it remained legal tender at three mark. This specimen was lot 4464 in Sincona sale 4 (Zürich, October 2011) where it sold for 1,400 CHF (about US$1,862 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Schaumburg-Lippe, Fürstentum Georg Wilhelm, 1807-1860. Doppeltaler 1857, Hannover. Auf das 50-jährige Regierungsjubiläum. Fast FDC aus Polierter Platte. Ex Auktion SBV 1/1993, Lot 758. (Principality of Schaumburg-Lippe, George William, 1807-60, double thaler of 1857, Hannover mint. On the fiftieth anniversary of the reign. Nice uncirculated on a polished planchet)."

This anniversary commemorative must have been saved as it is not rare despite the tiny mintage.

Recorded mintage: 2,000.

Specification: 37.03 g, 0.900 fine silver, 1.071 troy oz ASW, lettered edge, this specimen 37,03 g.

Catalog reference: Kahnt 526, Thun 388, Dav-908, KM 38 (formerly C49).
