Saxony 1902-E 5 mark Dav-901
This specimen was lot 32063 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. 5 Mark, 1902-E. Muldenhutten Mint. Albert. PCGS MS-65. "Lifetime" issue. Far scarcer than the "Death of Albert" variety, especially in this enviable state; the present example is bested by a mere three examples over the combined PCGS and NGC population reports. Impressively detailed and rippling with bold flash, with faint golden tone developing about the peripheries." This type was struck 1891-1902 and is fairly common in worn condition. The Dresden mint was moved to Muldenhutten in 1887. The Muldenhutten mint, after striking coins for the Saxon kings, later minted for the Weimar republic, the Nazis and the Communists before closing in 1953.
Recorded mintage: 168,200 plus 100,000 of the death commemorative.
Specification: 27.77 g, 0.900 fine silver, lettered edge, 38 mm diameter.
