This specimen was lot 1097 in Jean Elsen sale 161 (Brussels, March 2025), where it sold for €190 (about US$247 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, SAXE, Royaume, Johann (1854-1873), AR double Vereinstaler, 1859 F. Nettoyé. (Germany, kingdom of Saxony, John, 1854-73, silver double union thaler of 1859. Cleaned, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"
German double thalers are generally expensive but this type is fairly common, being issued 1857-59 in substantial numbers. The last double thaler was issued in 1872.
Recorded mintage: 323,000.
Specification: 37.04 g, 0.900 fine silver, 41 mm diameter, edge lettered "GOTT SEGNE SACHSEN".
