Saxony 1756-EC 5 thaler Fr-2859
This specimen was lot 42313 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. 5 Talers, 1756-EC. Leipzig Mint. Friedrich August II. PCGS VF-30. Though some moderate circulation is noted, this SCARCER type remains problem-free and exceptionally pleasing. It should be noted that the attribution on the holder by PCGS is incorrect, as Fr-2857 is for the 10 Talers type. From the Collection of Kazmier Wysocki, former mayor of Hackensack, New Jersey." This rare type was struck 1755-56. The Prussian army counterfeited this issue in 1761-62 during its occupation of Saxony during the Seven Years War; these are called "Ephraimites" (KM 944).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.65 g, 0.903 fine gold.
Catalog reference: Fr-2859; KM-943; Kop-2152.
