This specimen was lot 3365 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabruck, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,670 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Kriegsprägungen in Sachsen. Neuer August d'or (5 Taler) 1758 (geprägt 1761/1762), Berlin. Sehr geringhaltige Prägung. Münzmeister Ernst Dietrich Croll. GOLD. Kl. Kratzer, sehr schön. Erworben im März 1972. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, occupation issue for Saxony, gold five thaler dated 1758 (struck 1761 or 1762), Berlin mint. Very scanty coinage. Minor scratches, very fine.)"
The electorate of Saxony was invaded and occupied by the Prussian army 1756-59. This "Ephraimite" coinage is more correctly attributed to Saxony, as it was a copy of the Saxon august d'or. Altho dated 1755-58, it was made 1761-62, towards the end of the Seven Years War, when Frederick was facing bankruptcy and defeat.
Recorded mintage: 2.564.269.
Specification: 6.6-6.7 g, .318-.458 fine gold, this specimen 6,49 g.
