Saxony 1738 ducat Fr-2852a
The first specimen was lot 2490 in Sincona sale 20 (Zürich, October 2014), where it sold for CHF 1,300 (about US$1,629 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Dukat 1738. Auf die Verlobung der Prinzessin Maria Amalia mit Karl, König beider Sizilien. Gutes sehr schön. (ducat of 1738, on the wedding of princess Maria Amalia with Charles, king of Sicily. Good very fine.)" The second specimen was lot 3054 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 2,800 CHF (about US$3,324 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"POLEN. August III. 1733-1763 Dukat 1738. Auf die Hochzeit seiner Tochter Maria Amalia mit König Karl von Sizilien. Vorzüglich. (kingdom of Poland, Augustus III, 1733-63, ducat of 1738, on the marriage of his daughter Maria Amalia to king Charles of Sicily. Extremely fine.)"
Altho the auction catalog listed this specimen under Poland, thinking to realize a higher bid, this ducat is properly listed under Saxony, where the SCWC has placed it. Freidberg does not mention it in the seventh edition, perhaps believing it a medal. It is accompanied by a gulden (KM 897) and a double groschen (KM 891).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW, the first specimen 3.44 g, the second specimen 3.43 g.
