Künker sale 400, lot 218

This specimen was lot 218 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$7,135 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Johann Georg I. 1615-1656. Breiter doppelter Reichstaler 1650, Dresden, auf den Westfälischen Frieden. RR Feine Patina, kl. Kratzer, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der westfälischen Privatsammlung „Mehrfachportraits auf Münzen und Medaillen". (Germany, electorate of Saxony, John George I, 1615-56, broad double thaler of 1650, Dresden mint, on the Peace of Westphalia. Very rare, fine patina, minor scratches, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The elector had ample cause to celebrate the peace of Westphalia, which ended the Thirty Years War. A triple thaler (Dav-LS394) and quadruple thaler (Dav-LS393) were issued for the occasion.
