Künker sale 354, lot 5854

This specimen was lot 5854 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €750 (about US$1,044 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Johann Friedrich der Großmütige und Georg, 1534-1539. 1/2 Taler 1536, Annaberg. Sehr schön. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, John Frederick the Magnanimous and George, 1534-39, half thaler of 1536, Annaberg mint. Very fine.)"

The Ernestine line was the senior branch of Saxon dukes and held the electoral cap until the capture of Johann Friedrich in 1547, when the emperor confiscated it and awarded it to the Albertine line. Thereafter, the Thuringian state splintered into the Saxon duchies. This type was struck for the Ernestine line 1534-38 along with KM MB 192 and MB 211.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 14.15 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB192, Keilitz 132.
