Saxony 1535 thaler Dav-9719
This specimen was lot 52271 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony (Ernestine). Taler, 1535. Annaberg Mint. Johann Friedrich & Georg. PCGS AU-50. A fully attractive and problem free specimen, this Taler delivers strong details and only limited signs of actual circulation. Problem free and entirely enticing to the collector of German Talers. From the Augustana Collection." This type was struck 1534-35. The elector issued numerous thalers in 1535, including KM MB195 (shown here), MB196, MB197, MB198, MB199, MB200, MB201 and MB207 and a double thaler. The Ernestine elector participated in a league against the emperor and lost his electoral cap as a result, which cap was awarded in 1547 to the Albertine duke along with some territory.
