Künker Auction 425, lot 2317

This specimen was lot 2317 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €900 (about US$1,275 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM Johann Friedrich der Großmütige und Georg, 1534-1539. Taler 1535, Annaberg. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, John Frederick the Magnanimous and George, 1534-39, thaler of 1535, Annaberg mint. handsome patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

For 1535, the SCWC notes the following thalers: KM MB195/Dav-9719, KM MB196, KM MB197/Dav-9720, KM MB198, KM MB199/Dav-9721, KM MB200/Dav-9721 (shown here, struck 1534-39),KM MB201/Dav-9722 (Buchholz mint), KM MB207/Dav-9721A. Joint coinages were frequent during the early stages of the division between the Ernestine and Albertine dukes; the Ernestine branch splintered after 1554 into the Saxon duchies.
