Saxe-Weissenfels 1717 ducat Fr-3048
This specimen was lot 30098 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $7,050. The catalog description[1] noted, "Very Rare Commemorative Issue Saxe-Weissenfels. Christian gold Ducat 1717, MS62 NGC. Obv. Bust of Christian right. Rev. Kneeling Martin Luther with bread, wine, and Bible. Commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Reformation, this example is sharply struck, with reflective fields and only minor imperfections. Very rare. Christian was a duke of Saxe-Weissenfels and a member of the House of Wettin." Christian was the fourth of five dukes of this state, erected in 1656 for a younger son of John George of Saxony and lapsed in 1746 on the death of Johann Adolf II. The SCWC does not display photos of any of the gold issues from this state.
