Saxe-Weissenfels 1701 thaler Dav-7664
This specimen was lot 1699 in Jean Elsen sale 117 (Brussels, June 2013), where it sold for €3,400 (about US$5,361 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, SAXE-WEISSENFELS, Johann Georg (1697-1712), AR Taler, 1701, Klippe. Tir du Carnaval de Weissenfels. Droit: SCHIESSEN BEY DEM CARNEVAL AUF DER NEUEN AUGUSTUSB z WF Deux écus posés sur un rameau et une palme, sous une couronne. La date M-D-C-CI dans les angles. Revers: Etoile entourée du ruban de l'Ordre de l'Eléphant. Très Rare. Très Beau. (Germany, Saxe-Weissenfels, John George (1697-1712), silver thaler of 1701, klippe, on the Weissenfels shooting festival. Obverse: two shields over a palm branch, crown above, date in the angles; reverse: star, Order of the Elephant around. Very rare, very fine.)"
Davenport lists this rare type for 1699 and 1700 but not 1701.
