Weissenfels in 1789

This specimen was lot 249 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €3,300 (about US$4,281 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN-WEISSENFELS, HERZOGTUM, Christian, 1712-1736. 2/3 Talerklippe nach Leipziger Fuß 1713, Weissenfels, auf das Vogelschießen. Von großer Seltenheit. Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Weissenfels, Christian, 1712-36, 1713 klippe 2/3 thaler struck to the Leipzig standard, Weissenfels mint, for the bird shooting. Extremely rare, attractive example with handsome patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Christian was the fourth of five dukes of this state, erected in 1656 for a younger son of John George of Saxony and lapsed in 1746 on the death of Johann Adolf II. This rare type was issued again in 1714. The weight of this coin is less than that of a half thaler.
