Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72237
SB523-72237r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72237 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $870. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Middle-Weimar. 1/2 Taler, 1613-WA. Saalfeld Mint. Johann Ernst IV, with his seven brothers. PCGS AU-55. A VERY RARE denomination for a type much more commonly seen in the full Taler format, this minor retains excellent detail and a pleasing tone, all while displaying very little in the way of handling." The SCWC lists KM 15 and KM 16 as half thalers for 1613 but does not provide photos for either. KM 15 shows "DISCORDIÆ / FOMES INNRIA" below the four brothers on the obverse while KM 16 has only scrollwork, as shown here. The matching thaler (Dav-7527) is very common. Saxe-Middle Weimar existed only for 1605-40 before being partitioned by the surviving brothers.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-16.
