SB622-71048r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71048 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. Goldgulden, 1613-WA. Johann Ernst and his seven brothers. NGC MS-62. An exceedingly interesting type, this Goldgulden has 8 portraits, 4 on each side, that tell of the joint rule of 8 brothers. This specimen shimmers beautifully and dazzles with the well applied strike. A lovely and less commonly encountered piece." This type of 1613-19 is listed in the SCWC with a specification equal to a ducat but goldgulden were usually slightly lighter and lower in fineness. This accompanies a rather common thaler featuring the eight brothers (Dav-7527).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.25 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-3014; KM 19.
